Members of the association, and all those interested in the study of the Pacific Islands, are warmly invited to come to the Conference of the Pacific History Association for a week of intellectual vigour and indulgence. In addition to sun, sea and smiling faces, we offer fire-walking, beachcombing, aquatic adventures and rugby/soccer, an enthralling field trip, fine earth-baked food, and political stability – and we invite you to provide the intellectual interludes, all in a ‘Tropical Fruit Salad’ atmosphere.

 Dates

The PHA Conference will take place in Suva, Fiji from 7–12 December 2008. A pre-conference fieldtrip will be held on Sunday, 7 December (see below for details). The conference is being organized by PHA members at the University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Pacific Theological College (PTC).

Venue

Cost

The committee is looking into an all-inclusive conference fee that would include conference administration, venues, meals, welcome and conference dinner.

Planning Timeline 

Panels and presentations

Panels have been finalized. Presenters will have 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discussion). Panel coordinators are asked to exercise restraint on the number of panellist to eliminate/minimize parallel panels.

 Abstracts

Abstract offers after 1 August 2008 will be accepted subject to there being availability in the relevant panel and space in the program. Paper presenters should keep in touch with their panel coordinators.

The programme has been set according to submissions accepted as at 1 August 2008.

The Secretariat will accept changes only to those submissions accepted before 1 August until 31 October 2008.

Intending participants are advised to note that these dates will not be relaxed as the time approaches.

Fieldtrip to Fiji’s Earliest Settlement at Bourewa in Sigatoka will be held on Saturday 6 (for Pacific Roots) and Sunday 7 (for PHA) December.

There will be two excursions to cater for the two conferences.  The First is on Saturday 6th December and Second on Sunday 7th December.

 It is expected that persons attending the Pacific Roots Symposium will go on Saturday and persons attending the Pacific History Conference will go Sunday.  As long as there is room, any one can go on either day. If twice, you pay twice.

Departure: Pacific Roots Symposium attendees should check that Fieldtrip times do not clash with expected departure times in the weekend.

Arrival: Pacific History Association attendees arriving via Nadi during the weekend and wish to join should email Conference Secretariat for information on how to join from Nadi.

Depart from USP Bus Stop (opp. McDonalds) at 7.15am and Tanoa Plaza Hotel at 7.30 am.

Travel Route along Queen’s Highway through Navua and Sigatoka, arriving at Bourewa at 10.15 am.

Wander the area and relax on the adjacent beach

Traditional welcome (na isevusevu vakaturaga) at 12.15 pm in Vusama Village (2 km from Bourewa) where the traditional landowners reside. 

Kava drinking (optional but recommended) with people of Vusama until 1.30 pm.

Lunch in Vusama Village at 1.30 pm. 

Depart Vusama for Suva at 2.30 pm. 

Arrive Suva at 4.45 pm.

Cost F$40 per person all inclusive.

PRS attendants can pay before Saturday 6th Dec. but PHA members need to book before 30th November for Sunday 7th Dec. and pay on arrival at registration.

A range of Boards and Organisations will hold meetings including JPH, ICSPI, PMB and others. The Biennial General Meeting of the PHA will be held Friday 12, 8.00-10.00am. There will be book launches, mid-week excursions and teachers’ workshops.

A Special Symposium Announcement:

Symposium on Pacific Roots: Heritages and Identities

Pacific Specialists will be interested in an International Symposium “Pacific Roots, Heritages and Identities. Challenging the Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia Stereotypes”.

Pacific Roots brings together some of the world’s leading scientists to discourse “Pacific Roots” from the perspectives of their specialised field. The Symposium will be held from Monday 1st to Friday 5th December, at USP’s Laucala Bay Campus, Suva, before PHA.

Hosts

The co-hosts are USP and the French Centre for Research and Documentation on Oceania (CREDO) in Marseilles, with support from ANU, Universities of French Polynesia and New Caledonia and the French Embassy in Suva, Fiji.
